Previously, I wrote an overview pertaining to the specialty of orthodontics. This month, let’s talk about the aspect of the younger children. There are certain types of bite problems that can be difficult to treat once all of the baby teeth are gone.
Recently, a mother brought her 8-year-old son to my office, Mark Cloth Orthodontics, for a consultation. When her child bit his teeth together, the lower front teeth were in front of the upper. This is called an underbite. His back molar teeth were worn down due to the force of the bite and he had difficulty chewing. After talking for some time about options for her son, I recommended an early treatment that would begin the process of reversing his damaging growth pattern. Within eight months of beginning treatment, his bite aligned to a normal position.
Early orthodontic treatment can significantly benefit a child’s health and dental development. While most of the baby teeth were still present, the treatment I provided for this patient’s developmental problem at age 8 eliminated a potential handicapping growth pattern and helped to avoid a possible jaw surgery to correct his bite in the future.
Because I aspire to provide the very best outcome possible for each and every patient, I encourage parents to bring their children in for a complimentary consultation any time after age 7 to ensure that they are developing normally. If an early orthodontic treatment could significantly improve the dental health of your child, wouldn’t you want to know as soon as possible?
